Studio and general FAQS

I work at King of the Hill Tattoo Studio.
King of the Hill is a private tattoo studio and has recently relocated to Emerald Beach.
Emerald Beach is less than a 20 minute drive north of Coffs Harbour on the Mid-North Coast of NSW. Emerald Beach is a seaside village; and a cafe, general store, restaurant and beautiful beach are all within a short walking distance of the studio.
As the studio is private the street address is not given out until you have booked your appointment.
-
A private studio is a tattoo studio that is not open for the general public to walk into without an appointment.
This also means that neither myself or other artists at the studio do "walk ins". If I have last minute availability to fill I will advertise these spots on my Instagram stories.
We all handle our own bookings and are not able to answer enquiries on each other's behalf.
King of the Hill does not have a studio phone line. If you wish to contact me please send me an email or DM me on Instagram.
Please be aware that the studio may be locked if you drop by to see me without discussing this ahead of time, so please ensure you contact me before dropping by if you don't have a scheduled appointment!
-
Please arrive on time for your appointment or up to 5-10 minutes early.
It is best if you don't arrive more than 10 minutes before your appointment to minimise parking congestion in the area and I may still be with earlier clients or setting up for your appointment.
-
There is limited all-day street side parking at the studio.
If the front gate is open you are welcome to park inside the gate if there is enough room for car. Please leave enough room for the gate to be closed behind.
If you are parking on the street please take care not to block any neighbour's driveways.
It's fantastic if you can arrange a lift to and from the studio.

It may be painful. How much so depends on the placement, size, and style (colour vs dot shading).
I like comparing the sensation of being tattooed to scratching sunburn. It isn't pleasant but how painful it actually is varies person to person.
Everyone responds to pain differently and one person may find an area really painful that you find relatively painless and vice versa.
Generally people find placements with more nerve endings (such as hands) and bony areas more painful.

Yes you can. It is important to use it correctly and you must supply and apply it yourself. Please let me know if you want to use it for your appointment!
Local anaesthetic creams are available in pharmacies in Australia. I only recommend purchasing anaesthetic creams through pharmacies. Online non-pharmacy only brands may be available in higher strengths but they are not approved in Australia. This means they haven't been tested for safety or effectiveness. I've noticed less skin reactions from the ones available in pharmacies.
When used for tattoos you need to apply a thick layer of the cream and wrap it with cling wrap at least 1-2hrs before your appointment.
I recommend doing a spot test (in a spot you aren't getting tattooed) prior to your appointment date to ensure you don't experience any skin reactions (swelling or rashes). I won't be able to tattoo you if you use a cream and you've had an skin reaction to it!
Local anaesthetic creams are usually only effective for a couple of hours. This means the cream will likely wear off during the tattoo if you are getting a large piece. If you are considering using anaesthetic for larger piece you'll need to let me know so I can plan your appointment accordingly.

Unfortunately you won't be able to bring friends or family with you if they aren't also being tattooed that day.
This is due to insurance and the small private studio space. There is limited seating in my private room and our reception area for people to wait there for you.
If you have someone with you, I recommend they go visit the local cafe and relax at the lovely nearby beach while they wait!
Carers are welcome and are an exception to this policy. To have a carer sit with you while you are getting tattooed they will need to complete a consent form for our insurance.
-
Please be aware that you cannot bring children (of any age) with you into the studio, and this includes the reception area and the front yard.
The studio is setup as a private studio and does not have areas partitioned off to keep children from wandering into them. There are also no staff to supervise your children and their safety cannot be guaranteed, and therefore we cannot have clients bring children into the studio.
-
You can depending on where you are getting tattooed and whether you are able to sit still while using your device!
I recommend bringing headphones, then you can listen to music or an audiobook without having to hold your device (which works great for most placements!).
-
I do not tattoo anyone under the age of 18 years under any circumstances, regardless of parental consent.
This is not negotiable.
If you are under 18 years old you will have to wait until your 18th birthday until I will tattoo you. You are welcome to book ahead for your 18th birthday, and I've done this for a few clients! Contact me via email to arrange this!

Yes, I can do an estimated quote for tattoos as long as I have enough information. Please keep in mind that all quotes are approximate, and based off how long I expect the tattoo will take to complete. I usually give quotes in a range ($200-300 for example) due to potential design and size changes on the day and each client and their skin being different.
My hourly rate is $150/hr and large pieces are charged using my hourly rate. I sometimes offer my own pre-drawn designs at set prices, these are viewable on my Instagram Story highlight "Available flash".
For "full sleeves" I cannot give an accurate quote as these can be extremely detailed and take several months to complete and are charged using my hourly rate.

Yes I do! A lot of my work are custom designs. I love designing pieces in my style to bring my client's visions to life!
-
Yes, I do! They're free too!
I prefer to do my consult appointments in the morning before I start tattooing clients for the day. This is usually around 9:30am. Please complete a standard booking form or contact me via email to book in for a consult!
-
If you are a new client you can book an appointment by completing my Tattoo Booking Enquiry Google form
After reviewing your form I'll then contact you via email to offer you an appointment spot. Please check your junk email folder if you haven't heard back within a couple of weeks!
You will need to pay a non-refundable deposit to confirm your booking and secure the appointment spot.
On occasion I may feel that your tattoo idea isn't something that I can bring to life adequately, and I might recommend seeking a different artist that can do it justice.
-
I require a $100 non-refundable deposit to confirm all bookings. Your appointment isn't confirmed until a deposit is paid.
Your deposit is deducted from the total price due on the day of your appointment.
If you need to reschedule your appointment you will need to notify me at least 24hrs in advance or your deposit may be forfeited.
More details regarding deposits are available here.
-
I accept cash and bank transfers using PayID.
I do not offer Afterpay or similar services.

Yes I do! A lot of my work are custom designs. I love designing pieces in my style to bring my client's visions to life!
-
Please understand I am not able to do this for you. Drawing up custom designs can take me hours and I'm not willing to do this without a confirmed booking with a deposit.
-
This is something that I consider on a case-by-case basis.
If your art commission project sounds interesting to me (especially with the themes I gravitate towards such as death and decay in nature and esoterica) I'll definitely consider it if my workload allows and remuneration is adequate for the project.
-
I do not sell my designs, or offer "tattoo tokens" for purchase to be tattooed by other artists.
My pre-drawn designs are pieces that I want to tattoo, and are dear to me - especially my fully stipple shaded designs. I draw these on paper and shade them by hand with fineliner pens - which takes hours (stippling is an autistic stim for me). As such, I feel like I put part of myself into my art and I'm not comfortable with another tattooist taking that and tattooing it.
My larger pre-drawn designs are also one-offs they are supposed to be unique pieces.
If you're unable to travel to have me tattoo one of my designs for you, I suggest you approach a talented tattoo artist closer to you to design something especially for you. You can show my work as a starting point for inspiration, but your tattoo artist needs to change it up so it's their own (and to be honest, amazing tattooists don't enjoy just copying other artists' work without changing it and will often refuse to do so!).
I appreciate you respecting my wishes regarding this.
-
Not usually. I don't usually draw custom designs until the week before appointments at the earliest, sometimes it's the night before.
For large or complex pieces I may send you a sketch before your appointment to ensure I'm on the right track. Sometimes I may suggest a consult appointment.
Otherwise, it's ok if we've got to do some changes on the day to tweak the design!
Unfortunately there is a risk that a client will take a custom design an artist has drawn especially for them to a different artist (usually because they'll do it cheaper). Not sending out designs prior to appointments helps protect tattoo artists from having this unpleasant situation happening to them!

This depends on the animal. Currently I pin insects/arachnids and do wet taxidermy (fluid preservation) of small animals.
I've done a couple a couple of pet memorials for arachnids and rodents.
If you are considering approaching me for this please keep in mind the full process can take months to complete (especially wet taxidermy) and for best results cannot be rushed.
When your pet crosses the rainbow bridge (passes away) you will need to freeze them ASAP in a sealed plastic bag or container.
Prices depend on the size of the animal and for wet taxidermy whether a globe or apothecary style jar is used.
I can only offer this service to clients who can drop off and collect their pet in person. Your preserved pet is delicate and in the case of wet taxidermy contains highly flammable liquid making postage via Australia Post impossible.
Please contact me via Instagram DM or email for more info or to arrange this!
